About Altpersisch
Reconnecting with Our Past, Writing for the Future
Altpersisch is the Department of Historical Linguistics and Philology at our Language School, dedicated to teaching, learning, and researching the Achaemenid textual corpora. Based in South Khorasan, Iran, our initiative opens a gateway to one of the most remarkable written heritages of the ancient world, inviting learners from all walks of life to discover the Achaemenid legacy, study its languages, and learn to read, write, and interpret cuneiform inscriptions.

At the heart of Altpersisch lies a distinctive intellectual vision: to distinguish the original cuneiform writing system of the Achaemenid period from its modern, alphabetic adaptation. While the historical system was designed to represent Old Persian through a combination of syllabic signs and other graphic elements, our contemporary approach explores how Achaemenid cuneiform can be adapted to write modern Farsi. This initiative seeks to create a living connection between past and present while respecting the integrity of the ancient written heritage and preserving its historical identity.

This vision is developed and championed by Mahdi Xeinali, CEO and Senior Researcher at Altpersisch, whose work brings historical philology into dialogue with contemporary language learning.

To make this heritage accessible beyond the academic world, we have carefully designed a structured curriculum that introduces learners to the ancient past step by step. Students are given opportunities to practise cuneiform writing, explore the principles of Old Persian, and even converse in modern Farsi using Achaemenid-inspired cuneiform. In this way, an ancient script becomes not merely an object of study, but a skill to practise, a medium of expression, and a bridge between generations.

Yet our mission remains incomplete without you. Like a tree severed from its roots, a culture risks losing touch with the depth of its own history when its heritage is no longer lived and shared. Join Altpersisch, take a course, and become part of a community that brings the ancient world closer to everyday life. Learn a skill that can stay with you for a lifetime—and let every sign you write remind you of the history that continues to shape who we are.
